Saint Petersburg State University Delegation Begins Official Working Visit to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) to Strengthen Arctic Research and Educational Cooperation

The visit is taking place within the framework of the existing cooperation agreement between Saint Petersburg State University and the Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). During the visit, representatives of the university, regional authorities, academic institutions, and industrial partners will discuss new opportunities for joint scientific research, collaborative grant applications, and expanded educational programmes for students and young researchers.

A key objective of the visit is to develop interdisciplinary projects that address strategic challenges facing the Arctic region. Discussions focus on permafrost monitoring, climate change adaptation, geological sciences, mining engineering, sustainable resource management, environmental protection, digital technologies, and the application of advanced scientific methods to support sustainable development across the Russian Arctic.

An important component of the programme includes cooperation with the Mirny Polytechnic Institute, a branch of North-Eastern Federal University (NEFU), which has long served as one of Yakutia's leading educational centres for mining engineering, geology, mineral processing, and industrial technologies. The institute's close collaboration with the mining industry provides an ideal platform for expanding practical training, student internships, and applied research initiatives.

Industry participation is further strengthened through cooperation with ALROSA, one of the world's leading diamond mining companies. ALROSA continues to support educational initiatives, scientific research, technological innovation, and sustainable regional development throughout the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), creating opportunities for students and researchers to gain practical experience while contributing to the future of the Arctic mining sector.

During the visit, participants are expected to prepare proposals for joint national and international research grants, establish new research partnerships, and create opportunities for academic mobility between Saint Petersburg and Yakutia. Particular emphasis is being placed on integrating education, scientific research, government priorities, and industrial expertise into a unified framework for Arctic innovation.

The programme also coincides with growing regional efforts to inspire the next generation of Arctic scientists. A recently launched educational initiative in the Verkhnevilyuysk District will enable school students to participate in research activities dedicated to the Arctic environment and permafrost.
